Important Information
Please note that whether one chooses to apply for summer or fall, the deadline is February 1. One should apply as early as possible because slots frequently fill prior to the deadline as our professors follow a "rolling admission" procedure. This means that applications are reviewed and admission decisions made as application packets are completed.
Admissions
One may apply for admission to the Community College Leadership Program (CCLP), either with our May Intersession courses (summer admission) or in fall. Although not mandatory, it is highly recommended that students begin their program of study with the May Intersession classes. Experience has shown that students who begin in May can complete their graduate program of study with two summers and an academic year, if they are pursuing the Ed.D.
If after you have thoroughly read the information about CCLP and find that you are seriously interested in applying, please call or e-mail our office (see contact info) to discuss a visit to meet with professors and students and to sit in on class.
The admission standards delineated below are department minima. Individual programs may have additional requirements.
To be considered for admission to the Ed.D. or Ph.D. Program of the Department of Educational Administration, a person must apply to the Graduate School. The following should be sent directly to Graduate and International Admissions (GIAC):
- A report of the scores for the Verbal and Quantitative scales of the Graduate Record Examination. GRE scores older than five years are not valid. To schedule a Test or view Test Preparation Materials, go to GRE for Test Takers.
- Official transcripts of all attempted graduate and undergraduate
academic work. (A Master's degree and a 3.0 GPA are required for
admission to the Program.)
The following should be submitted to the Department of Educational Administration:
- A statement of career goals, including information on the necessity for, or relevance of, an Ed.D. or Ph.D. in meeting those goals.
- Three current letters of reference from people familiar with the applicant's proper academic and/or field performance.
- A current resume.
The Graduate Advisor refers the applicant's materials to the Community College Leadership Program for review. The Program faculty will vote to recommend admission of its respective applicants. In addition to the minimum requirements of the Graduate School and Department, the Graduate Advisor shall consider the availability and willingness of at least one Program member to serve as advisor.
When the CCLP Program recommends admission of an applicant who does not meet the minimum requirements, the Graduate Advisor will review the Program's basis for concluding that the applicant's aptitude is high enough for doctoral study. Any number of reasons are sufficient for the Graduate Advisor to concur with a recommendation of admission despite an applicant's failure to meet the test and/or other guidelines. For example, applicants of great promise may earn invalidly low scores. A written rationale for admission, supported by the CCLP Director of such applicants despite their failure to meet the guidelines, shall be submitted to the Graduate Advisor.
When a review of the CCLP's recommendation leads the Graduate Advisor to conclude that an applicant has sufficient aptitude and that an eligible advisor is available and willing, the Graduate Advisor will recommend to the Graduate School that the applicant be admitted for doctoral study. When the Graduate Advisor concludes that a recommendation for admission may not be justified, the Graduate Advisor will consult with the CCLP Director. Agreement of the CCLP Director and the Graduate Advisor will result in a recommendation to the Graduate School about the applicant's admission.
