About the CCLP Students
CCLP students are recruited from across the United States and Canada. The Program has graduated more women and ethnic minorities into major leadership roles than any other graduate program in American higher education. The program has been recognized in numerous national reports and studies for its commitment to and success with diversity.
Equally important, CCLP graduates play prominent national leadership roles with the nation's 1300 community colleges. The current President of the American Association of Community Colleges, George W. Boggs, is a Distinguished CCLP Graduate. Dr. Boggs is also a Past Chairman of the AACC Board of Directors. Gerardo de los Santos, another Distinguished CCLP Graduate, serves as President and CEO of the League for Innovation in the Community College. Distinguished CCLP Graduate, Kay McClenney, heads the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) at The University of Texas at Austin, where she also serves as a Senior Lecturer in the CCLP. Dr. Byron McClenney, another Distinguished CCLP Graduate, is directing the U.T. "Achieving the Dream" project and serves as a Senior Lecturer in the CCLP as well.
CCLP Distinguished Grad, President Emeritus Bob McCabe of Miami-Dade Community College, received the 1992 McGraw Prize in Education and was also selected as the first MacArthur Foundation Fellow from a community college. Distinguished Grad, Alfredo G. de los Santos Jr., Professor of Higher Education at Arizona State University and former Vice Chancellor of the Maricopa Community Colleges, received the 1999 McGraw Prize in Education™ only the second community college person (Bob McCabe was the other) to be selected for this national recognition.
CCLP graduates have also played prominent leadership roles in the American Association of Community Colleges. In addition to Dr. George Boggs, Dr. Joe B. Rushing, Chancellor Emeritus of the Tarrant County College District, Dr. Jan LeCroy, Chancellor Emeritus of the Dallas County Community College District, and Dr. Walter Bumphus, President of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, have all served as AACC Board Chairs. Numerous CCLP graduates have been elected to the AACC Board of Directors and other national organizations.
The American Association of Community Colleges recognizes each year individuals who have had national impact on American Community Colleges. CCLP faculty who have received the AACC National Leadership Award include C. C. Colvert, CCLP's Founder, John E. Roueche, Suanne Davis Roueche, Donald G. Phelps (deceased), The Honorable Wilhelmina Delco, George Baker, III, Ed Gleazer, and Terry O'Banion. CCLP graduates who have received the AACC award include Bob McCabe, President Emeritus, Miami-Dade Community College, Dale Campbell at the University of Florida, Jan LeCroy, and Alfredo de los Santos.
While the focus of the CCLP is on the preparation of institutional and organizational leaders, the program has also graduated a large number of professors of higher education/community colleges.
